Bad breath (Halitosis) is a common oral health problem. Regardless, it still profoundly affects one’s self-confidence and self-esteem. It can also be a sign of potential diseases. Luckily, you can treat it yourself.

The most common way to keep bad breath away is to practice good hygiene in your oral area. However, the treatment of halitosis depends on the underlying cause. Knowing the cause is essential. Halitosis can be caused by one or more of the following:

    • Poor oral hygiene: brush and floss irregularly 
    • Infection in the oral area: gum disease, dental caries, etc.
    • Bad habits: smoking, unhealthy diet, etc.
    • Food: eating/ drinking strong-smelling food/ drinks

    • Medical causes such as dry mouth, cancer, metabolic disorder, tonsillitis, acid reflux, etc.
    • Change of hormones: some women experience halitosis during the menstrual cycle

How to treat bad breath effectively

Although distinctive breath odor is not harmful, it has a negative impact on the quality of life. Therefore, you should take immediate measures to treat it. Here are useful ways to treat foul breath: 

    • Find out the underlying cause of your bad breath. If necessary, visit your dentist for an examination and effective treatment. 
    • Have regular dental check-ups
    • Practice proper hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing. Brush at least twice a day. Do not go to bed without brushing your teeth. Consider mouthwash.
    • Have a healthy and balanced diet. Drink water and eat more greens every day. Limit alcohol intake and smoking habits. 
    • Promptly seek for treatment of disease or infection that causes bad-smelling breath.
